Best film: Irwin Winkler and 34 others for Silence (reviewed Feb, 25) Best director: Martin Scorsese for Silence Best script: Tom Ford for Nocturnal Animals (reviewed sometime last year; review sadly irretrievable due to the proclivities of free cyberspace) Best actor: Jake Gyllenhaal for Nocturnal Animals Best actress: Jessica Chastain for Miss Sloane (psycho/driven lobbyist with a heart of gold buried under a million tons tungsten, successfully sticking it to the proverbial “system” in a political thriller that, if not based on a true story, should be) Best supporting actor: Nick Offerman for The Founder (one of the original MacDonald brothers, with a borderline autistic deadpan all-American delivery) Best supporting actress: Nicole Kidman for Genius (Michael Grandage) (only "star" in an all-"star" cast with the discipline to hide herself behind the character of the neglected mistress of an insufferable literary “genius”) Best soundtrack: Justin Hurwitz for La La Land (reviewed March 7) Best cinematography: Seamus McGarvey for Nocturnal Animals Best editing: Thelma Schoonmaker for Silence Best FX: Matthew Armstrong and 35 others for Beauty and the Beast Best animation: Zootopia (Byron Howard, Rich Moore and Jared Bush)(zoomorphic fun and pathos, as usual out of the Disney/Pixar concern) Best non-Tinsel: As Mil e Uma Noites (Miguel Gomes) (reviewed July 12 2016) Best wardrobe – Jane Petrie for Genius |
